Michelle Rutherford of Mullica Hill, NJ, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, surrounded by her children.
She was a devoted and loving mother, cherished by her family and deeply loved by all who knew her. Michelle is survived by her children, Chelsea & Robert Rutherford, mother, Virginia Breen (née Volpe), brothers, Chuck and Steve Breen, and by her extended family and friends who will miss her dearly. She was predeceased by her son, James Rutherford, her father, Charles Breen and nephew Kevin Breen.
Michelle was born on July 20, 1960. She carried with her a quiet strength, warmth, and compassion that defined how she lived and how she loved. She had a deep appreciation for meaningful places and moments, including York Beach, ME. Nubble Lighthouse held a special place in her heart, representing peace, steadiness, and reflection. If she wasn't there in person, she was checking the 24-hour live feed online to watch the waves.
Michelle dedicated over 30 years of her professional life to the Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania, where she built a respected and meaningful career in nursing. She retired in February 2025, leaving behind a legacy of commitment, professionalism, and unmatched care for her patients.
Her career was especially meaningful given the path she took to achieve it. While raising her children as a single mother, Michelle returned to school in her 30s and earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Nursing with a near perfect GPA, a testament to her determination, resilience, and belief in the importance of education. She was a quiet example of perseverance and strength, inspiring those around her through her actions rather than words.
Above all else, Michelle was devoted to her family. Her love was constant and unconditional, and her final words, "I love you. I love you. I love you.", are a reflection of the way she lived her life and the legacy she leaves behind.
Michelle believed in the enduring power of love and connection. Though she is no longer with us, she will live on in the hearts of those who loved her, in shared memories, and in the quiet moments where her presence is still felt.
