Obituary

Joseph C. Kalnas, age 99 passed away at his home on April 1, 2017.

Joe was born in Paulsboro to his parents, Joseph and Frances Auksztakolnis. They later shortened their last name to Kalnas. He moved to Gibbstown when he was 10 and graduated from Paulsboro High in 1935.

He served in WWII as a platoon sergeant with the 78th Infantry. Joe fought gallantly until being wounded at the Remagen Bridge. After spending six months in a French hospital, he came home and resumed work at the Paulsboro Oil Refinery, retiring after 43 years. Joe enjoyed his retirement by farming and following Paulsboro sports.

Joe was predeceased by his loving wife of 47 years, Helen (nee Hanko); his brother, Charles; three sisters, Mildred Kalnas, Anna Bruce, and Lena Chilbert; and two grandsons, George and Jeff.

He is survived by seven children, Joe Jr, George, Catherine, David, Michael, Henry and John; eleven grandchildren, Joe, Judy, Jonathan, Justin, Greg, Jessica, Kurt, Scott, Eric, Joseph, and Danielle; one brother, Peter, and many great grandchildren.

Viewing will be Fri 6-8pm and Sat 9-10am at Landolfi Funeral Home 300 W. Broad St. Paulsboro. Funeral service will be celebrated Sat. at 10am. Burial Eglington Cemetery Clarksboro with full military honors.
