Obituary

The world is a little less bright without John Gatto.  John passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Teresa and a devoted father to Antonio Gatto (Meaghan), Caterina Saile (Michael), Giovanna Carchidi (Vito Amato), and Teresa Gatto (Brian Abbott). He was an incredibly proud and loving Nonno to Luca, Matteo, Michael, John, Adrianna, and Joseph, who were the light of his life.

He is also survived by his brothers- and sisters-in-law: Gabriele (Maria) Muraca, Frank (Debra) Muraca, Dominic (Anita) Muraca, Rosa Tecce (Enzo), Peter Muraca (Lisa), and Joseph Muraca; his brother Vincenzo Gatto; his sister Marianna Mosca; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins near and far, all of whom he cherished deeply. He was predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Caterina; his in-laws, Raffaele and Giovanna Muraca; and his brother, Gregorio Gatto.

Born in Botricello, Calabria, a small town in Southern Italy, John embodied the spirit of the American dream — built on hard work, family, and resilience. He spent nearly 50 years in Paulsboro, New Jersey, where he raised his family and was a beloved member of the community. Later in life, John and Teresa retired to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where they enjoyed time with family and friends near the ocean he loved.

John carried with him the values of family, tenacity, and dedication throughout his life. A contractor by trade, he worked tirelessly to provide for his family, but his true legacy was not just the structures he built — it was the family, friendships, and community he cultivated around him. He was a board member of the Sons of Italy in Paulsboro for over 40 years, where he enjoyed celebrating his heritage and gathering with friends.

He loved soccer, music, dancing, and making people laugh. He had a special gift for bringing people together. Nothing made John happier than a house full of family and friends sharing food, laughter, music, and celebrating life's moments, big and small.

Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing that the values he taught us, the traditions he cherished, and the love he gave so freely will remain with us always. A life so deeply loved leaves a legacy that time can never take away.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate John's life, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at St. Clare of Assisi Parish (St. Michael's Church), Memorial Avenue, Gibbstown, from 9:30-11:15am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 11:30am. Interment St. Joseph's Cemetery, Swedesboro NJ. Arrangements by LANDOLFI FUNERAL HOME of Paulsboro.
