Harry H. Magazu, Colonel, (Ret. USAF) - (Sept. 8, 1930 – Sept. 5, 2020)
Harry H. Magazu, of Gibbstown, NJ, died peacefully on Sept. 5, 2020. Harry was born in his parents' home in Gibbstown, Sept. 8, 1930. He is predeceased by his parents Domenic and Sarah Magazu (nee Rizzo), and his siblings: Fran, Annie, Rose, Frank and Mary, and son-in-law Chuck Nicholson. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Catherine (nee Nastasi), his sisters Dolores DuBeau and Joanne Damminger, and his seven children: Domenic II (Linda), Mark (Carol), Brian (Karen), Maria (Don Jr.), Donna, Beth (Larry), and Harry Kevin. Harry was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
He attended Gibbstown Broad Street School and Paulsboro High School. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force.
During his 26-year USAF career, Harry served in many roles including air traffic controller at Hahn AB, West Germany, Base Civil Engineer at Offutt AFB, NE and Deputy Director of Civil Engineering for the Strategic Air Command (SAC). His exemplary career called him to serve at locations across the world. Harry served with honor and distinction during the Korean, Vietnam and the Cold Wars and was awarded many military decorations. While on active duty, Harry and his family lived in Maine, Germany, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Nebraska and Guam. Colonel Magazu retired in 1978 and moved back home to Gibbstown, NJ.
In his civilian life, Harry worked as an engineer for Crothall Industries. He was Chairman Emeritus of Century Federal Savings Bank, and supported Greenwich and Logan Townships as a building inspector and tax assessor. Always a proponent of education, Harry served as a substitute teacher at Paulsboro High School and on the Gibbstown School Board. He was member of the Paulsboro Stag Club, Gibbstown Pool, Sons of Italy and the Anthony T. Calista VFW Post 5579.
Harry was a man of character, a decent and honest man who loved his God, Country and Family. He enjoyed annual family trips to the shore, days at the Gibbstown pool, picnics, crab feasts in his back yard, and family holiday traditions. He loved hunting, fishing, and his vegetable garden.
Friends and family can pay their respects Friday, September 11 th between 9:00-11:00 at Landolfi Funeral home located at 300 W. Broad Street in Paulsboro, NJ, a mass of Christian burial will follow from 11:30-12:30 at St. Claire of Assisi Catholic Church on Memorial Ave, Gibbstown, NJ. The interment ceremony will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Swedesboro, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Veterans Advisory Council-Gloucester County Veterans, Veterans Affairs Office, PO Box 337, Woodbury, NJ 08096 or, the Guardian Angels Regional School, 150 South School St., Gibbstown, NJ 08027.
