Obituary

Gerald (Jerry) Byrne, 74, of Gibbstown, NJ, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on May 10th, 2020 after a brief battle with heart disease.

Jerry was born on June 16th, 1945 to Martin and Doris Byrne in Camden, NJ. After graduating from St. James High School in 1964, he went on to serve in the U.S Navy during the Vietnam War from 1965-1969. He served as a Marine Mechanic with the Navy on the U.S.S. New Jersey. He was always a proud veteran and remained actively involved as a member of the Gibbstown VFW and served as Post Commander. He volunteered for the veterans at the Elsmere VAMC in Delaware.

After serving in the Navy, Jerry landed a job as a lineman for Atlantic City Electric in Glassboro, NJ, and enjoyed 17 years of retirement following 32 years of employment. While employed he was also involved in the IBEW union as a shop steward.

On June 13 th , 1970, Jerry married Darla (Houbary) and together they raised three children – Donna, Judy and Patrick. He was a loving father who was always proud and supportive of his children. He also served as  commissioner of the Gibbstown Little League and was a member of the St. Michael's Mutual club.

During his retirement, he enjoyed many interests including watching Phillies games and wrestling matches, as well as golfing, hunting, fishing, gardening, astronomy and birdwatching.

Jerry was predeceased by his father Martin, his mother Doris, brother Terry and canine companion Merlin. He is survived by his wife Darla, and children Donna (Giovanni), Judy (Steve) and Patrick; grandchildren Max, Stephen and Mackenzie and his siblings Marty, Michael, Nancy and Kathy. Also many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Gibbstown VFW Post #5579, 743 W. Broad St., Gibbstown NJ 08027 or the American Heart Association.
