Frederick Trueland Reel, 88 of Gibbstown, died Thursday, July 28, 2016. He had suffered a fall and was being treated at Power Back Rehabilitation in Moorestown, New Jersey. Fred was surrounded by his four children: Sharon Reel, George Reel, Marianne Davies, and Laura Plantz.
Born May 24, 1928, In Woodbury, NJ, Fred was the son of late George Frederick Reel, and Alice Mae Kirkbride. He was a graduate of Paulsboro High School, Class of 1946 and a graduate of Pennsylvania Military College, Class of 1950 (now Widener University). He served in the Korean War from 1950-1951, in the 74th Engineer Combat Battalion and was active in the Army Reserves until retirement as a full Colonel.
Fred married Mary Ann Magazu, his beloved wife of 56 years (deceased October 8, 2008). He worked as a Civil Engineer for the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard until his retirement in 1988.
He is survived by his 10 grandchildren: Krista, Gregory, Erica (Sharon and Carl); Steven, Matthew, Daniel, Mark (George and Paulette); Ryan, Gwen (Marianne and Steve); and Hanna (Laura and Bernie), and two great-grandchildren: Everett (Krista and Jon); and Harrison (Daniel and Megan).
In his spare time Fred enjoyed gardening, fishing, and trapping. In later years, he also enjoyed spending time with his close friend and companion, Peggy Dimeo. In retirement, he served on two local school boards. He was passionate about political and environmental causes and his letters regarding such were frequently published in the Reader's View section of South Jersey Times.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at St. Claire of Assisi Parish (St. Michael's Church, 313 Memorial Avenue, Gibbstown, New Jersey. Viewing will be at 10:00 a.m. with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. with internment following at Eglington Cemetery, 320 Kings Highway, Clarksboro, New Jersey.
