Obituary

Alan James Young, 83 of Paulsboro, passed away peacefully at home with his loved ones on August 28, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Erma C. Young, his daughter

Stephanie Anne Young (Juan Santa Marina), his son Jamison Alan Young (Janean) and his beloved grandson Kyle Young and granddaughters Jaylynn Dorman and Destiny Gregory. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Alan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and attended Dobbins Vocational Highschool. He was on the football team and played in the school's All American Jazz Band. After graduation he played semi-professional football as a center for Marble Newtown for several years.

Alan was a professional musician for 60 years. He played the alto, tenor, baritone and soprano saxophones, flute, keyboard and sang. He was a sought-after studio musician in New York and Philadelphia. At one point in his career he was offered a job touring with Janis Joplin.

He was a versatile musician who traveled the world and performed rock and roll, country and jazz music, which was his true love. Alan had many fascinating adventures that included traveling in the south during the sixties and seventies as a long-haired hippie driving a Volkswagen Bus, to performing in a band on a cruise ship and many madcap escapades in between. He regaled his family and friends with his tales.

He loved animals, especially horses and cats. His band Muggles was named after an abandoned Manx  kitten that he found on the side of the road while traveling home after a gig. At one point in his music career he traveled with Snow, a Persian cat who was his side kick and retired to the family home with Alan.

He touched many lives with his music and made lasting friendships to include his Muggles bandmates, George Lang, Greg Throop, Richard Cassenti, Reesa Marchetti and Eric Peterson.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date for family and friends to celebrate Alan's life and love of music.

Alan loved New Orleans and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and asks that In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic (neworleansmusiciansclinic.org).
